African Deeds with Mandy Parker-Sharp

Tuesday 7 October

Theatre and music creative Mandy Parker-Sharp brings her powerful project African Deeds to Lambeth this Black History Month. Following the successful launch of her Black British family collection and book at the Black Cultural Archives, Mandy now takes her unique multi-media storytelling on the road.

African Deeds is inspired by Mandy’s great-grandfather’s 1899 land title deeds, which pass through three generations. Through these historic documents, she unearths a rare African ancestry story predating the Windrush era, offering a fresh and vital perspective on Black British history.

The narrative introduces standout characters including Thomas Brem-Wilson (1865–1929), a pioneering Pentecostalist and African businessman known as the “Black Pastor of Peckham”; Philip Brem-Wilson (1908–1999), nicknamed “Mr Bingo,” a South London song-and-dance man who crossed paths with the Richardson gang; and Nina Brem-Wilson (1937–2021), a market worker from Lewisham and Deptford whose quest for ancestral roots leads to an astonishing discovery of gold.

Blending readings, visuals, soundscapes, and original documents, Mandy weaves together archive and performance in vibrant, multi-layered storytelling. The result is both moving and dynamic, bringing hidden family histories to life while connecting them to broader narratives of migration, identity, and community.

This event promises to be a highlight of Black History Month—a rare chance to experience a story of legacy, resilience, and discovery, told with creativity, warmth, and unforgettable energy.
