Black History Month 2026

Black History Month UK is marked each October and brings communities across the country together to recognise, celebrate and reflect on the contributions of Black people to British society. From local histories and family stories to national achievements in science, education, public service and the arts, these experiences are part of our shared history.

In 2026, we continue our year-round commitment to learning, understanding and connection — supporting schools, community groups, workplaces, public bodies and individuals to explore Black British history and heritage in ways that are meaningful, inclusive and grounded in lived experience.

What Black History Month UK Is About

Black History Month UK exists to ensure that Black history is recognised and understood as a core part of British history — shaped not only by well-known figures, but by communities, families and everyday lives across generations.

We believe Black history is best understood when it is shared locally, discussed openly and connected to the places people live, learn and work.

Supporting Communities to Take Part

Schools & Education
Resources and learning materials that help teachers and pupils explore Black history through local stories, national history and wider global connections.

Free Community Event Promotion
We promote Black History Month events free of charge for community groups, schools, charities, faith organisations, cultural groups and local organisers across the UK — helping communities share their work, increase participation and reach wider audiences.

Workplaces & Public Services
Support for employers, the NHS and public bodies to engage with Black History Month in ways that are thoughtful, relevant and rooted in community understanding.

Stories, Articles & Voices
Editorial content that highlights Black British history through personal stories, community perspectives, cultural expression and historical research.

Campaigns & Shared Projects
Posters, exhibitions and collaborative campaigns that bring people together around learning, reflection and recognition.

A Platform for Community Voices

We welcome contributions from community organisers, educators, historians, artists, writers, elders and young people who wish to share stories, events, projects and perspectives connected to Black British history and lived experience.

Black History Month UK is a shared space — shaped by the communities who take part, contribute and pass knowledge on to future generations.

Why Community History Matters

Black history lives in neighbourhoods, schools, workplaces, places of worship and family memories.

By creating space for these stories to be shared, Black History Month helps strengthen understanding, build connection and ensure that history reflects the diversity of the people who have shaped Britain.

Explore. Share. Take Part.

Join communities across the UK in marking Black History Month UK 2026.
