This initiative has been established to formally recognise Black individuals whose lives, leadership and service have made a measurable and meaningful contribution to Britain.
Black history is not solely defined by landmark moments or prominent national figures. It is sustained daily through civic leadership, professional excellence, cultural contribution and community commitment. Honouring Black Britain 2026 seeks to acknowledge those whose work strengthens institutions, supports communities and advances British society.
Nominations may include both living individuals and, where appropriate, individuals who have recently passed away whose contribution continues to carry influence and significance.
Purpose and Scope
Through a national nomination process and curated selection, a distinguished group of individuals will be formally recognised as part of the Black History Month 2026 programme.
Honourees will:
- Be profiled in Black History Month Magazine 2026 (September edition)
- Be recognised during Black History Month 2026 (October)
- Feature in a professionally produced exhibition poster series
- Be included across BlackHistoryMonth.org.uk digital platforms
This initiative is curated and independently reviewed. It is not a public vote or popularity exercise. Final selections will be made by an appointed panel to ensure integrity, balance and national representation.
Eligibility
Nominations are open to individuals, schools, community organisations and members of the public across the United Kingdom.
Nominees must be Black individuals whose contribution demonstrates leadership, service, innovation or sustained impact within their field or community.
Areas of contribution may include (but are not limited to):
- Education and academic leadership
- Healthcare and public service
- Community and civic leadership
- Arts, culture and heritage
- Business and enterprise
- Youth development and mentoring
- Faith and voluntary service
- Grassroots organisation and advocacy
Where a nominee has passed away, submissions should be made respectfully and, where appropriate, with awareness of the individual’s family or representative.
Submission Requirements
Nominators must provide:
- Contact details
- The nominee’s name and location
- A clear outline of the nominee’s role or contribution
- A written tribute (500–800 words) detailing impact and significance
Submissions must be original writing. AI-generated content will not be accepted.
Photographs may be provided where appropriate permission has been granted.
Editorial Process
Selected tributes may be edited for clarity, length and professional presentation. The integrity of the original submission will be preserved.
Honourees will be featured within:
- Black History Month Magazine 2026
- A curated Black History Month 2026 exhibition poster series
- Digital features across official platforms
Key Dates
All nominations must be submitted by midnight (GMT UK time), 30 May 2026.
Selected honourees will be publicly recognised during Black History Month 2026.
