Everything You Need for Black History Month 2026

The Black History Month Resource Pack 2026 has been created for schools, businesses, local authorities, charities, community organisations, libraries, museums, cultural venues and event organisers.

Instead of spending hours sourcing materials from different places, the Resource Pack gives you a coordinated collection of exhibition, educational, audio and digital resources created specifically for Black History Month 2026.

At the heart of this year’s pack is Honouring Black Britain 2026 — a major new exhibition celebrating 54 people whose leadership, service, courage, creativity and commitment have made a meaningful contribution to communities and to British life.

Some are nationally recognised.

Others have spent years making an extraordinary difference within their communities without receiving wider recognition.

Together, their stories remind us that Black history is not only something we look back on.

It is being made around us every day.

Honouring Our Communities

Black History Month 2026 invites us to recognise the communities that shape, support and strengthen Britain.

This year’s theme, Honouring Our Communities, reflects the fact that Black history is not only made through landmark events or by famous names.

It is also created through everyday acts of leadership, care, service, creativity, courage and commitment.

Across Britain, Black people are contributing through education, healthcare, faith, business, sport, culture, heritage, public service, environmental action, youth work, volunteering and grassroots community leadership.

They are teachers and healthcare professionals. Artists and entrepreneurs. Veterans and faith leaders. Mentors, campaigners, historians, volunteers and community organisers.

Some have influenced national conversations. Others have transformed individual lives, neighbourhoods and local communities.

The Black History Month Resource Pack 2026 has been created to help organisations discover those stories and share them with a wider audience.

Honouring Black Britain 2026

54 People. Six A1 Exhibition Posters. One Story of Black Britain Today.

At the heart of the Resource Pack is Honouring Black Britain 2026 — a major new exhibition celebrating 54 people across six specially created A1 posters.

Each poster will feature nine people, bringing together stories of leadership, achievement, service and community contribution.

The people represented come from a remarkable range of backgrounds and fields, including education, healthcare, faith, heritage, sport, culture, business, public service and community leadership.

Among those being recognised are Professor Sir Patrick Vernon, whose campaigning and heritage work has helped bring greater recognition to the Windrush Generation; The Rt Revd Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Bishop of Dover, whose leadership in faith and public life has made her an important figure in contemporary Black Britain; Ralph Ottey, whose service with the Royal Air Force during the Second World War represents an important story of Caribbean service and sacrifice; and Dr Andrew Brown, whose community leadership has championed health, wellbeing, opportunity and stronger representation for Black communities.

They are just four examples.

Alongside nationally recognised figures, Honouring Black Britain 2026 will celebrate people whose contribution has often taken place quietly within their communities — people who have spent years teaching, caring, mentoring, serving, campaigning, creating opportunities and opening doors for others.

Across the six posters, 54 stories come together to create a powerful picture of Black leadership, service, achievement and contribution in Britain today.

The full Honouring Black Britain 2026 line-up will be announced separately.

54 People. 54 Stories to Hear.

The exhibition does not end with the posters.

Every person featured in Honouring Black Britain 2026 will also have their own individual audio story.

That means the Resource Pack will include 54 audio stories, giving audiences the opportunity to hear about the lives, achievements and contributions of the people featured.

See their portrait.

Read their story.

Hear their journey.

The audio stories can be used in classrooms, assemblies, exhibitions, libraries, workplaces, community events, cultural programmes and for independent learning.

For schools, they provide another accessible way for pupils to engage with Black British history and contemporary Black Britain.

Teachers can combine a poster, written profile and audio story to create a complete learning activity around an individual.

For workplaces and community organisations, the audio stories can add another dimension to exhibitions, staff engagement and Black History Month events.

The combination of six A1 posters, 54 individual profiles and 54 audio stories turns the Resource Pack into much more than a traditional poster exhibition.

It creates a multimedia Black History Month experience.

Design the Black History Month 40th Anniversary Flag

A Special Classroom Challenge Looking Ahead to 2027

In 2027, Black History Month in Britain will mark its 40th anniversary, four decades after the first Black History Month was held in Britain in 1987.

As part of the 2026 Resource Pack, pupils will be invited to take part in a special creative challenge:

Design a Black History Month 40th Anniversary Flag

Children will be encouraged to imagine what a flag representing 40 years of Black History Month in Britain should look like.

They can consider questions such as:

  • What colours would you choose, and why?
  • What symbols could represent Black British history?
  • How could your flag represent community?
  • How could it recognise the past while looking towards the future?
  • What does 40 years of Black History Month mean?
  • What message would you want your flag to communicate?

The activity brings together history, art, design, citizenship and discussion in one creative classroom project.

It also encourages young people to see Black History Month as something they can help shape.

What should the flag for 40 years of Black History Month in Britain look like?

We want young people to help us imagine it.

More Than a Month of Posters

Black History Month can be much more than a display on a wall.

The 2026 Resource Pack gives organisations enough material to create a programme of activity throughout October.

Schools can use the resources across lessons, assemblies, libraries, exhibitions and classroom displays.

Businesses can use them for staff learning, internal communications, events, exhibitions and digital campaigns.

Local authorities, charities and community organisations can use them for public displays, exhibitions, events and educational programmes.

Libraries, museums and cultural venues can combine posters, profiles and audio stories to create engaging experiences for visitors.

You can choose the resources that best suit your organisation and your audience.
