Randall Goosby & Zhu Wang: Bologne & Schubert

Sunday 11 May

The internationally acclaimed young violin and piano duo offer a feast of seductively gorgeous music, bringing to life the agony and ecstasy of French romanticism.

The American violinist Randall Goosby has won plaudits everywhere for his championing of Black composers.

Today he and pianist Zhu Wang open with the classical charm of Sonata No.3 by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the superstar of 18th-century France who was a favourite of Queen Marie-Antoinette, and the first composer of African descent to achieve widespread acclaim in Europe.

Continuing the French theme, the duo move on to the energetic and ecstatic Violin Sonata No.1 by the young Gabriel Fauré, whose breakthrough work it was.

After the interval they perform the lyrical and mysterious Poème by Fauré’s colleague Ernest Chausson, and the concert ends with Schubert’s irresistible Rondo brillant.
