Experience the powerful sound of the Balimaya Project, a London-based big band blending West African Mandé traditions with contemporary jazz, Afrobeat and the sounds of Black London.
Led by percussionist Yahael Camara Onono, the ensemble brings together up to 16 musicians from across generations and backgrounds, creating a rich, layered sound rooted in rhythm, collaboration and cultural exchange. Their music reflects both African heritage and diasporic identity, combining traditional instrumentation with modern jazz arrangements and improvisation.
Since forming in 2019, Balimaya Project has established itself as one of the most exciting collectives on the UK jazz scene. Their debut album Wolo So introduced a bold, expansive sound, while When The Dust Settles (2023) deepened their exploration of personal and collective experience. Their latest work continues to push boundaries, blending global influences into a dynamic and contemporary musical language.
Live, the group delivers an immersive and high-energy performance, built on polyrhythms, horn arrangements and a strong sense of unity. Their sound has drawn comparisons to Fela Kuti and Sun Ra, reflecting both scale and innovation.
Expect an evening that celebrates African diasporic music, community and shared rhythm, in one of London’s most iconic live music venues.
