Join local residents, families and community organisations for a special Windrush Day Celebration in Tilbury, the historic port where HMT Empire Windrush arrived in Britain on 22 June 1948.
Held on National Windrush Day, this free community event honours the generations whose contributions helped shape modern Britain while bringing people together through culture, creativity and shared experiences.
The evening programme features a Windrush-themed Sip and Paint session, inviting participants to create their own artwork inspired by the people, places and stories connected to the Windrush legacy. No artistic experience is required, making it an accessible and enjoyable activity for all ages.
Visitors can also take part in traditional games including dominoes, cards and draughts, with friendly competitions and prizes throughout the evening. Accompanied by Caribbean food and the sounds of classic reggae music, the event aims to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere where stories can be shared, memories celebrated and new connections made.
Taking place in the town most closely associated with the arrival of the Empire Windrush, the celebration provides a meaningful opportunity to reflect on an important chapter in British history while recognising the enduring influence of Caribbean communities across the UK.
Open to everyone, the event welcomes elders, young people, families and local residents for an evening of remembrance, celebration and community spirit.
