Black British Folk Takeover returns to Cecil Sharp House for an inspiring festival-style celebration exploring the rich and often overlooked contributions of the African diaspora to Britain’s folk traditions. Presented in collaboration with the Black British Folk Collective and curated by acclaimed musician, writer and researcher Angeline Morrison, this unique all-day event brings together music, storytelling, discussion and creative participation to celebrate the diverse histories that have shaped British folk culture.
Running throughout the afternoon and evening, the programme features an exciting mix of live performances, storytelling sessions, workshops, conversations and participatory activities, inviting audiences to discover the deep historical connections between Black communities and Britain’s traditional music and cultural heritage. The event shines a light on stories that have too often been overlooked, revealing how the African diaspora has long influenced, enriched and reimagined folk traditions across the British Isles.
Curator Angeline Morrison, whose award-winning work has transformed conversations around Black British folk history, has brought together an outstanding line-up of artists, musicians and cultural practitioners who continue to expand and redefine the genre. Through performances and discussions, audiences will explore themes of identity, belonging, migration, memory and cultural exchange while celebrating the creativity and resilience of Black voices within folk music.
