Black Heroes of Mathematics 2026 (BHOM26) returns this October as a global celebration of Black excellence in mathematics, education and scientific achievement. Taking place over two days in Edinburgh and online, the free hybrid event brings together leading mathematicians, educators, researchers, students and advocates to celebrate the achievements of Black mathematicians while inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in mathematics and the mathematical sciences.
Organised through a partnership between the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS), the London Mathematical Society (LMS) and Big Ideas, BHOM26 continues a growing international movement dedicated to increasing the visibility of Black role models within mathematics and promoting greater diversity across the discipline.
The conference will feature an exciting programme of keynote presentations, panel discussions, research talks and educational sessions exploring mathematical discovery, innovation and the importance of representation within higher education, schools and industry. Bringing together speakers from across the UK and around the world, the event provides opportunities to learn from internationally recognised mathematicians while celebrating the achievements of Black scholars whose contributions have helped shape the subject.
Alongside the main conference, Black Heroes of Mathematics 2026 introduces a new Youth Festival, designed specifically for schools across the UK. Delivered virtually, the festival will give thousands of pupils the opportunity to engage with inspiring Black mathematicians through interactive sessions, classroom activities and presentations that demonstrate how mathematics can open doors to exciting careers in science, technology, engineering, finance, education and research. Schools wishing to participate are invited to register their interest by contacting the organisers.
More than a conference, BHOM26 aims to challenge stereotypes, celebrate achievement and encourage greater participation in mathematics by showcasing successful Black role models whose work continues to influence research, education and innovation across the world. By highlighting both historical pioneers and contemporary leaders, the event demonstrates that mathematics is a discipline enriched by diverse perspectives and experiences.
Taking place during Black History Month 2026, Black Heroes of Mathematics 2026 provides an opportunity to celebrate academic excellence while encouraging meaningful conversations about inclusion, representation and opportunity within STEM education. Whether attending in person in Edinburgh or joining online from anywhere in the world, participants can expect two inspiring days of learning, collaboration and celebration that recognise the vital contributions Black mathematicians continue to make to the global mathematical community.
