NLA Walking Tour: Brixton Black History

Saturday 24th October 2026

NLA Walking Tour: Brixton Black History explores the people, buildings and events that have helped make Brixton one of the most important locations in modern Black British history.

Presented by New London Architecture, the two-hour guided walk looks at how migration, architecture, community activism, business and culture have shaped this distinctive part of South London.

Brixton became home to many Caribbean migrants during the decades following the Second World War and subsequently developed into a major centre of Black British community and cultural life.

The area has played an important role in music, business, journalism, political organising and campaigns against racial discrimination.

Participants will explore locations connected with these histories while considering how Brixton’s physical environment has changed alongside the communities who live and work there.

Beginning in Windrush Square, the tour places familiar streets and buildings within a broader historical context and highlights stories that visitors may otherwise pass without noticing.

The event provides both London residents and visitors with an opportunity to explore Black British history directly within the neighbourhood where many important events unfolded.

Taking place during Black History Month 2026, the tour combines social history with architecture and place, providing a distinctive way of discovering Brixton’s past and present.
