Women of Soul returns to Left Bank Leeds for an evening celebrating the women who have kept Northern Soul, Motown, R&B, ska and classic soul alive across generations.
Running from early evening until midnight, the event brings together original scene legends, lifelong soul enthusiasts and a new generation of Soul Sisters and Rude Girls for six hours of records, dancing and community.
Northern Soul has a particularly important history across northern England. Emerging around a passion for rare American soul recordings, the scene transformed clubs and dance halls into spaces where often overlooked recordings by Black American performers found passionate new audiences.
Women of Soul places women at the centre of that story, recognising the DJs, collectors, dancers and fans who have helped sustain soul culture while introducing the music to younger audiences.
Visitors can expect a soundtrack spanning classic Northern Soul, Motown, R&B, ska and popular soul, alongside more unusual records selected by people with a deep knowledge and love of the music.
The event begins at 6:00pm, making it accessible to those who prefer an earlier evening as well as dedicated dancers planning to stay until midnight.
There will also be soul food and independent traders, with stalls expected to include vinyl, clothing and other items connected with music and culture.
The setting adds another dimension to the evening. Left Bank occupies a striking Grade II* listed former church in the heart of Leeds, creating an atmospheric space for dancing while also providing seating for anyone wanting to step away from the dance floor.
Taking place during Black History Month, Women of Soul celebrates musical traditions created by Black artists while recognising the communities in Britain that have preserved, championed and continually rediscovered their work.
Expect rare vinyl, dance-floor favourites and plenty of opportunities to keep moving until midnight.
