Norwich turns back the clock to the golden era of contemporary R&B as R&B Lovers returns to Epic Studios for its annual celebration of the biggest sounds of the 1990s and 2000s.
The event promises five hours of R&B anthems accompanied by live performers, hosts and festival-style production, creating an evening built around nostalgia, dancing and some of the most influential Black popular music of the period.
The soundtrack reads like a history of two extraordinary decades in R&B and hip-hop.
Audiences can expect music associated with artists including Destiny’s Child, Ashanti, Usher, Lauryn Hill, TLC, Brandy, Monica, Missy Elliott, Ne-Yo, Ginuwine, Jodeci, Mary J. Blige, Sean Paul, Eve, Ja Rule, Ludacris, Nelly, Kelis, Amerie, Mya, Dru Hill, Joe and 112.
During the 1990s and early 2000s, R&B became one of the dominant forces in international popular music.
Black singers, producers, songwriters and groups transformed not only the charts but also fashion, dance, music-video culture and the sounds that would influence subsequent generations of pop, hip-hop and British R&B.
It was also a period of remarkable musical variety.
Gospel-influenced vocals could sit alongside hip-hop production, slow jams alongside dance-floor records, while Caribbean performers helped bring dancehall and other Caribbean sounds further into international popular culture.
Producers and writers developed new rhythmic and electronic approaches that continue to influence contemporary music.
