Dundee’s Caird Hall becomes a Northern Soul dancefloor as Northern Live – Do I Love You? celebrates the records that developed an extraordinary following in Britain during the 1960s and 1970s.
The production features an eleven-piece live band and four lead vocalists performing more than 30 songs associated with the Northern Soul scene.
The programme includes music by Dobie Gray, Gloria Jones, Frank Wilson, Al Wilson, Yvonne Baker, Jimmy Radcliffe, Garnet Mimms and Dean Parrish, among many others.
Behind the high-energy dancing and rare-record culture lies an important Black music story.
Northern Soul developed around American soul recordings, many created by African American singers whose records were sometimes commercially unsuccessful or barely known in their home country.
British collectors searched record shops and warehouses for these forgotten releases and introduced them to new audiences at clubs across the Midlands and northern England.
The result was a uniquely British subculture built around Black American music.
For many fans, discovering an obscure record was part of the excitement. DJs guarded the identity of rare tracks, dancers developed increasingly athletic styles and particular venues became destinations for people prepared to travel through the night simply to hear the music.
That cultural exchange makes Northern Soul a valuable subject during Black History Month.
The British scene developed its own identity, but the singers, songwriters, musicians and record labels that provided its soundtrack came from the wider African American tradition of soul and R&B.
Northern Live puts those songs back into a live setting with a large band and multiple vocalists.
For Dundee audiences, it offers an energetic celebration of a British musical movement whose heart has always beaten to the sound of Black American soul.
