South African Heritage Day comes to Wimbledon Park this September with a vibrant community celebration of culture, identity, music, food and shared heritage.
Heritage Day is one of South Africa’s best-known national celebrations. Introduced following the country’s transition to democracy in 1994, it provides an opportunity for people from different racial, cultural and ethnic backgrounds to celebrate the traditions and histories that make up modern South Africa.
Over the years, Heritage Day has also become an important occasion for South Africans living overseas, bringing communities together and creating opportunities to share South African culture with friends, neighbours and the wider public.
This London celebration was first established in 2022 by Women of Valour, a charity working to support communities in the UK. The event has continued to grow as a space for South Africans and others to come together in celebration.
Visitors can expect a full programme including traditional clothing, live music, dance, South African food, speeches and community activities. Small businesses will also have the opportunity to showcase their products and services through stalls throughout the day.
The organisers are expecting between 800 and 1,000 people to attend.
Invited guests include representatives from the South African High Commission and the Mayor of Merton, with short addresses expected to reflect on South Africa’s journey, community connections and the relationship between South Africans living in Britain and their wider local communities.
At its heart, the event is about bringing people together through culture. It celebrates South Africa’s diversity while creating a welcoming space where different generations can share traditions, music, food and stories.
The South African Heritage Day Celebration takes place at Wimbledon Park on Saturday 19th September 2026 from 1:00pm to 8:00pm.
The event is free to attend, but advance registration is required through the organisers’ website.
