Made You Look is a powerful one-man poetry performance exploring masculinity, migration, identity and what it means to live as an immigrant in a Britain that can feel increasingly hostile towards minorities and women.
Performed by Ty’rone Haughton, the show combines spoken word, movement and visual art to create an intense and deeply personal theatrical experience. Rather than presenting poetry as something static, Made You Look uses the full stage to explore difficult questions around belonging, vulnerability, memory, prejudice and how men are expected to behave.
The production examines the pressures attached to masculinity and the ways those expectations can become even more complicated when shaped by race, migration and social inequality. Through Haughton’s writing and performance, the audience is invited to consider who gets to feel safe, who is allowed to show vulnerability and what it means to be truly seen.
Visual art forms an important part of the production. The set also functions as an exhibition, drawing out themes, images and references from the performance and giving audiences another way to engage with the work.
The experience continues after the performance itself. Haughton remains in the theatre, and audiences are invited to stay in the space for reflection and conversation, as well as to explore and interact with the set.
The show has received strong critical praise for both its writing and performance. Everything Theatre described it as “Acerbic writing and feverish performance”, while Brighton Journal praised Haughton for transforming spoken word into a charged conversation about masculinity, memory and being seen.
Taking place during Black History Month 2026, Made You Look offers a compelling exploration of Black British identity, migration and masculinity through contemporary poetry and performance.
Made You Look is at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, on Saturday 17th October 2026, beginning at 7:45pm.
