Removing the Mask: The Journey from Surviving to Living brings the community together during Black History Month for an honest and empowering exploration of the experiences that continue to shape Black individuals and families today.

 

Taking place in Willesden, the event creates a space for open conversation around identity, emotional wellbeing, family, culture and some of the expectations placed on Black people in Britain.

At the centre of the programme is a discussion about the familiar idea of the “strong Black woman” and “strong Black man” and the pressures that can come with always being expected to cope, remain resilient and hide vulnerability.

The event asks what happens when those masks are removed and people are given the opportunity to talk honestly about experiences that may have been carried privately for years.

Another important theme is intergenerational and inherited trauma, exploring how difficult experiences can affect families and communities across generations and how understanding those patterns can help create change.

The programme will also address mental health stigma within Black communities, encouraging greater openness around emotional wellbeing and challenging the idea that asking for support represents weakness.

Rather than approaching Black History Month solely through historical figures and events, Removing the Mask looks at how history, culture and lived experience continue to affect people in the present.

The aim is to encourage greater understanding rather than judgement and to create opportunities for people to connect, learn from one another and consider what it means to move from simply surviving towards living more fully.

The event is designed as a community conversation in which personal experience, reflection and shared learning sit alongside the wider themes of Black history and culture.

Removing the Mask: The Journey from Surviving to Living takes place at BBMC Studio in Willesden on Saturday 24th October 2026 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm.
