Stories of Dover and the World – Celebrating Black History Month

Stories from Dover and around the world come together through music, dance, spoken word, food and family activities in this free celebration for Black History Month 2026.

 

Taking place at the historic Maison Dieu in Dover, the afternoon brings members of different communities together to share cultural traditions and experiences through live performance and participation.

The programme includes African music, dance and drumming, alongside performances from artists and musicians representing different cultural backgrounds.

A highlight of the afternoon is an appearance by Zimbabwean singer Tsungai Tsikirai, whose music draws on her Southern African heritage and combines traditional influences with contemporary sounds.

She is joined by musicians from The Orchestra from Everywhere, contributing to an afternoon designed around cultural exchange and the ways music can connect people across borders.

Visitors will also be able to take part in a djembe drumming workshop, samba drumming session and mbira playing session.

The mbira, sometimes known as a thumb piano, has a long history in Southern Africa and is particularly closely associated with the musical traditions of Zimbabwe.

Alongside the live music, there will be arts and crafts activities and opportunities to enjoy African and Caribbean food.

For Black History Month audiences, the event offers an accessible way for families to encounter African and Caribbean culture through music, food, storytelling and creative activity rather than simply observing from the sidelines.

The event is organised by Shiva Nova and the Maison Dieu as part of Black History Month.

Stories of Dover and the World – Celebrating Black History Month takes place at Maison Dieu in Dover on Saturday 3rd October 2026 from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.

The event is free, family-friendly and drop-in.
