Journalist Symeon Brown comes to Brixton Library to discuss The Good, the Black and the Boujee, an exploration of Britain’s Black middle class and the complicated relationship between race, class, ambition and success.
From broadcasting and law to politics, acting and online content creation, Black professionals occupy prominent positions in some of Britain’s most visible industries. Yet many continue to describe entrenched racism and substantial barriers to advancement.
Brown examines this apparent contradiction, asking how Black professionals have reached these positions, what their progress has cost them and what the growth of a Black middle class means for Black Britain more widely.
Drawing on an extensive study of Britain’s Black middle class and elite, his book combines social history with an examination of the class and gender dynamics shaping contemporary Black British life. It considers both the financial and psychological consequences of pursuing upward mobility.
Part of Lambeth Libraries’ Black History Month programme, this author event offers an opportunity to explore questions of representation, inequality and belonging beyond the visibility of individual success stories.
