In 1961, nineteen-year-old Lucinda Brown leaves Barbados for England in search of Clarence Braithwaite, her son’s father, who has joined the British Army. During the voyage to Southampton, she meets Raldo, a man who offers the possibility of a different future.
Thinking of the son she has left behind, Lucinda chooses Clarence, only to discover that his experiences of war have changed him.
Almost fifty years later, a letter from the Home Office threatens the life she has built. Through Lucinda’s story, Smallie explores the ways earlier decisions and unresolved histories can return to reshape the present.
Part of Lambeth Libraries’ Black History Month programme, this literary event introduces a novel about family, belonging and the human consequences of the Windrush scandal.
