Join Brixton Library’s Radical Readers for a discussion of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail, a defence of nonviolent direct action against racial segregation.
Written on 16 April 1963 while King was imprisoned in Birmingham, Alabama, the letter challenges the argument that the struggle for civil rights should wait for a more convenient moment.
King expresses his frustration with white moderates who place social order above justice. He examines the distinction between just and unjust laws and argues that people have a moral responsibility to resist injustice.
This Black History Month reading-group session offers an opportunity to discuss the letter’s arguments and reflect on its place in the history of the civil rights movement.
