Prizewinning South London writer Lisa Smith joins Mel Pennant to discuss Jamaica Road, a love story set within a close-knit British-Jamaican community.
In 1981, Daphne is the only Black girl in her South London class. Her life changes when Connie arrives from Jamaica, beginning a relationship that develops against a backdrop of unrest in the city.
As their friendship deepens, family tensions and a dangerous secret complicate their lives. Over the following decade, the pair must navigate questions of love, loyalty and belonging as they grow close, fall apart and attempt to find their way back to one another.
Lisa Smith will be in conversation with Mel Pennant, author of A Murder for Miss Hortense.
Organised with the Friends of Carnegie Library, this Black History Month author event explores a story of friendship and love shaped by family, community and the changing world around its characters.
