Authors Peter Kalu and Muli Amaye discuss writing, identity, imagination and their latest books as part of Oldham Libraries’ Black History Month programme.
Peter Kalu is a novelist, playwright and poet whose writing moves between realism, surrealism and comedy.
His latest book, Act Normal, is an experimental memoir filled with stories from the real to the extraordinary. Published by HopeRoad, it was shortlisted for the 2026 Jhalak Prize.
Kalu received a Society of Authors Travelling Scholarship Award in 2024 to support the completion of the book. For many years, he also ran a Trinidad-inspired carnival band called Moko Jumbi. The trickster figures found within West African and Caribbean folklore remain an important influence on his work.
Muli Amaye is a novelist and short-story writer. Her debut novel, A House With No Angels, was published by Crocus Press in 2019.
In 2024, she was longlisted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize and reached the second round of the Bridport Prize. Her latest book, The Black Writer’s Toolbox, was published by Bloomsbury in January 2026.
