What happens when returning home brings not reconciliation, but a reckoning?
As part of Soul to Soul: Cinematic Routes of Return, Sandpit Collective, in partnership with The Rose Hill, presents a special screening of Hyenas, directed by acclaimed Senegalese filmmaker Djibril Diop Mambéty.
After decades away, the fabulously wealthy Linguère Ramatou returns to her impoverished hometown of Colobane. She offers its inhabitants a seemingly miraculous proposition: wealth beyond anything they could have imagined.
However, her generosity comes at a devastating price.
Released in 1992, Hyenas is freely adapted from Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s celebrated play The Visit. Mambéty transforms the European story into a powerful and unsettling vision of postcolonial Senegal.
As imported goods begin to flood the town and collective morality gives way to personal desire, the film asks what independence means in a world increasingly governed by money, consumption and global capital.
If the opening film in the season, Soul to Soul, presents return as an opportunity for cultural reconnection, Hyenas brings audiences back to Africa through a very different kind of homecoming.
Linguère returns not in search of acceptance or belonging, but with the power to transform the community she left behind. Her return becomes an act of revenge, and the promise of prosperity carries a disturbing price.
The screening closes Soul to Soul: Cinematic Routes of Return, a three-film Black History Month season presented through the Other Asias Film Programme.
Through stories of independence, migration, identity, belonging and return, the season explores the connections between Africa and its diasporas.
The evening will begin with a short curatorial introduction, followed by the film screening and an informal facilitated discussion. Snacks and music will follow afterwards.
