Award-winning Caribbean artist Venetta Nicole explores identity, belonging, memory and resilience through a vibrant visual language of colour, shape, texture and movement.
Presented as part of Redbridge’s Black History Month celebrations, A Language of Colour and Form brings together works by London-based Caribbean artist Venetta Nicole.
Working intuitively across abstraction, portraiture and architectural forms, Nicole transforms personal experiences, memories, cultural heritage and emotional landscapes into vibrant, layered compositions.
Through her distinctive perspective, she invites visitors to look beyond literal representation and consider how colour and form can communicate feelings and experiences that words sometimes cannot express.
Her work explores identity, belonging, resilience, memory and the complexities of human experience, while creating space for visitors to bring their own interpretations and stories to each piece.
The exhibition reflects Nicole’s belief that art is a language of freedom—a space where experiences can be expressed, reimagined and viewed from different perspectives.
Venetta Nicole is a London-based Caribbean artist and former Ilford resident who graduated from Middlesex University in 2007. She received the Women in Art Prize Susan Angoy Award in 2022, was a finalist in the Dubel Art Prize in 2025 and won the Women in Art Prize Tim May Memorial Award in 2026.
Her previous collaborators include Roche, Yamaha, Arup, Get Living and Bulgar Construction. Following her first solo exhibition in 2024, her work was collected by Tunji Akintokun and Kemide Lawson of Cottage Noir.
The exhibition takes place in the Gallery at Valentines Mansion, a Grade II* listed building in Ilford. Entry is free, and the exhibition is suitable for visitors of all ages.
