In Conversation: Santilla Chingaipe and Colin Grant

Friday 16th October 2026

Historian and filmmaker Santilla Chingaipe joins acclaimed author Colin Grant for a fascinating conversation about Australia’s forgotten Black convicts and the connections between Britain, Africa, the Caribbean and Australia.

Afrori Books welcomes Santilla Chingaipe to Brighton for a special evening exploring her groundbreaking book, Black Convicts: How Slavery Shaped Australia.

Published in the UK by Jacaranda Books, Black Convicts recovers the largely erased stories of Australia’s Black convicts and opens a wider conversation about empire, slavery, race, migration and memory.

At least 15 convicts aboard Australia’s First Fleet in 1788 were of African descent. By 1840, that number had risen to almost 500, yet many of their lives have effectively disappeared from Australia’s national story.

Drawing on years of archival research, Santilla reveals the connections between British, Caribbean and Australian colonial histories. She also considers how historical research can recover the stories of people and communities who have been marginalised, overlooked or erased.

Santilla Chingaipe is a Zambian-born Australian filmmaker, historian and writer. Her multidisciplinary work spans film, history and literature, examining themes including mobility, memory, erasure and identity.

She will be joined in conversation by Colin Grant, an acclaimed author, Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and Director of WritersMosaic, a division of the Royal Literary Fund.

Grant’s writing has appeared in publications including the Guardian, Observer, New Statesman, Times Literary Supplement, London Review of Books, Granta and New York Review of Books. During his career with the BBC, he also wrote and directed several radio drama documentaries.

The event offers an opportunity to learn more about the research and writing behind Black Convicts, meet the author and have a copy of the book signed.

There will also be a prize draw, with the chance to win tickets to another Afrori Books event.
