Black History Month Community Day Event 2026

Saturday 31st October 2026

Join BME Suffolk Support Group and the University of Suffolk for a community celebration filled with culture, history, music, food, performances and family activities.

The Black History Month Community Day Event 2026 brings people from across Ipswich and Suffolk together to celebrate Black history, culture, identity and community achievement.

This year’s event takes inspiration from the theme A Century of Black History Commemorations, recognising 100 years since the first Black history commemorations were established in 1926.

The celebration will explore the importance of Black history within British society and its role in shaping identity, belonging and understanding.

Through talks, workshops, poetry, music, food and traditional clothing, the event will showcase Black heritage and recognise the contributions Black individuals and communities have made locally and nationally.

Speakers taking part include:

  • Phanuel Mutumburi, Director of Ipswich and Suffolk Council for Racial Equality
  • Oumou, co-founder of the African Caribbean Unity Council for Advancement
  • Ibrahim Diakite, President of the High Council of Mali UK
  • Funmilayo Akinriboya, founder and director of BME Suffolk Support Group
