Fire Inna Dancehall: A Legacy of Sound, Style and Struggle

Friday 30th October 2026

Author Derek A. Bardowell comes to Bristol for a Black History Month evening exploring the people, places and politics behind one of the world’s most influential Black cultural movements.

Drawing on his book Fire Inna Dancehall, Bardowell traces dancehall from inner-city Kingston to London council estates, New York block parties and underground scenes in Panama and Puerto Rico.

The discussion explores dancehall not simply as a musical genre, but as a culture shaped by migration, politics, faith, masculinity, resistance, creativity and the struggle for self-determination.

The event will also consider the way dancehall has influenced music, fashion, language and popular culture around the world.

By looking at the social and political history behind the music, the evening offers a wider understanding of why dancehall became such an important form of Black cultural expression.

The event is presented by Black South West Network as part of Bristol’s Black History Month programme.

The event runs from 6pm to 9pm.

Admission is free.
