The extraordinary music of Luther Vandross is celebrated in Aberdeen with Luther UK, starring vocalist Harry Cambridge and a seven-piece live band.
The production revisits a catalogue that includes Never Too Much, Give Me the Reason and Dance with My Father, alongside music connected with artists who worked with Vandross during his long career.
Harry Cambridge has been performing Vandross’s music for many years, including an appearance on ITV’s Stars in Their Eyes, and the Tivoli production combines live vocals and musicians with a full theatrical presentation.
Behind the familiar love songs is the story of one of the most accomplished voices in African American popular music.
Vandross developed his career through the world of session singing and arrangement before becoming an internationally successful solo artist.
His official biography traces a career that stretched from early television work in 1969 to major Grammy success, while the Grammy Museum recognises him as an eight-time Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, arranger and producer.
His smooth and technically precise vocal style became enormously influential across soul and R&B.
For Black History Month, celebrating Vandross also means recognising the wider Black American musical tradition that made artists like him possible — from gospel vocal technique and rhythm and blues to the sophisticated soul production of the 1970s and 1980s.
