Passion for Fashion: an evening of tales from Africa

After-hours fun as Brighton Museum stays open for Museums at Night. Relax with a drink and listen to new stories and poetry by writers inspired by the role fashion has played on their lives. See the Fashion Cities Africa exhibition and get a closer look at objects from the Museum’s Africa collection.  Admission £5, members £4, book in advance.

The three writers performing are:

Ken N. Kamoche
Kamoche was born and raised in Kenya. His collection of short stories, A Fragile Hope (Salt, 2007) was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Best First Book Award. He studied commerce at the University of Nairobi and management at Oxford where he was a Rhodes Scholar and is currently a professor of management at Nottingham University.

Rounke Coker
Rounke Coker was born in Nigeria in 1962 of black African and white parentage. Her short stories ‘The Inadvertant Creation of a Soul Sister’ and ‘Ojo and the Armed Robbers’ have been published in anthologies Map of Me (Penguin) and African Love Stories (Ayebia) respectively.

Rounke now lives in Brighton where she works as a resources assistant in an academic library.

Leeto Thale
Leeto Thale is a South African performance poet, writer and musician. He has served as the host for the African Writers Evening for a number of years, as well as a song writing and poetry workshop facilitator. Leeto has collaborated with dance companies as a spoken word artist and performed at internationally renowned festivals such as WOMAD and Gnaoa Music Festival. He was poet-in-residence at the Arc Gallery.
Leeto is currently involved in a multi-media project involving photography, painting, music and poetry.

This event is part of the Africa Arts Festival, a weekend celebration, 28-30 October, of African fashion, film, food, music and literature inspired by the Fashion Cities Africa exhibition at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery.
