Black History Month Family Fun: Wear Your Story – Upcycling with Adire

Saturday 24th October 2026

Families are invited to discover the colour, creativity and textile traditions of the Yoruba people of Nigeria at a free Black History Month workshop at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery.

Led by artist Tomi, the hands-on session introduces Adire, the traditional Yoruba art of creating patterned indigo-dyed cloth.

Children and families will explore how fabric, patterns and adornment can carry stories about culture, identity, heritage and creativity across generations.

Using pieces of Adire fabric, participants can make their own accessories and objects to take home, including bracelets, earrings, brooches, hair accessories, keyrings, bag charms and book covers.

No previous craft experience is needed.

The workshop is suitable for families and children aged six and over. Children must be accompanied by a parent or carer.

The session runs from 11am to 3pm in the Activity Room on the first floor.

Admission is free and no booking is required.
