Dr Roy Hackett MBE Legacy Trail

Saturday 3rd October 2026

Walk through St Werburghs and St Paul’s while discovering the life and legacy of Dr Roy Hackett MBE, one of the leading figures behind the historic Bristol Bus Boycott.

Dr Roy Hackett MBE devoted his life to social justice, racial equality and strengthening Bristol’s communities. He became widely known for his involvement in the Bristol Bus Boycott of 1963, a landmark campaign challenging the refusal of the Bristol Omnibus Company to employ Black and Asian bus crews.

The successful boycott attracted national attention and helped build momentum towards Britain’s first Race Relations Act in 1965.

Roy was also closely connected to the development of St Paul’s Carnival and remained an active and respected community figure throughout his life.

This guided walk will follow some of the streets Roy knew so well. He enjoyed walking around his neighbourhood, stopping to speak with friends, neighbours and strangers along the way.

The route will include places connected to Roy’s life and activism, alongside other important points of local history across St Werburghs and St Paul’s.

The walk will be led by Ruth Pitter and Richard Dixon, activists following in Roy’s footsteps. They will share stories about Roy, his contribution to Bristol and the communities he worked so hard to support.

Those attending are also warmly invited to share their own memories and stories during the walk.

The walk will last approximately one hour and 30 minutes. It follows a circular route beginning and ending at St Werburghs Community Centre.

Please wear comfortable footwear and dress appropriately for the weather.

Advance booking is required.
