First Born Second: Voices of the Children of the Windrush Era

Thursday 29th October 2026

A powerful new documentary brings together seven Black Bristolians to tell the story of growing up as children of the Windrush generation in Britain during the 1970s and 1980s.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Michelle Pascal and co-produced by writer and curator Roger Griffith MBE, First Born Second explores both the joy and pain experienced by the generation born in Britain to Caribbean parents.

The film looks at what it meant to grow up Black and British while navigating racism, cultural identity, discriminatory SUS laws and the pressure of belonging to two worlds.

The contributors include Professor Shawn Sobers, Sherrie Eugene-Hart, Latoyah McAllister-Jones, Beverly Douglas, Delroy Hibbert, Vernon Samuels and Roger Griffith.

Their stories reflect resilience, achievement, creativity and cultural change, from breaking barriers in broadcasting, policing and sport to becoming leaders within Bristol’s Black communities.

Following the screening, Michelle Pascal, Roger Griffith and members of the cast will take part in an audience Q&A hosted by Euella Jackson.

There will also be free Caribbean patties for the first 50 people through the door.

The screening starts at 6pm and is followed by the Q&A.

Age classification: 15.
