Launch of the Lambeth Libraries Black Classic Literature Collection

Saturday 1 November

A landmark celebration of Black British and diasporic literature takes centre stage with the unveiling of the Black Classic Literature Collection. This exciting new initiative brings together timeless works that have shaped culture, politics and identity across generations.

The collection spans genres and voices, from the poetic brilliance of Una Marson to the radical prose of CLR James. Novels, essays, memoirs and poetry sit side by side in a curated selection that honours the depth and breadth of Black literary traditions.

These works are more than books — they are acts of resilience and creativity. They showcase revolutionary ideas, bold perspectives and enduring stories that have long deserved a central place in the literary canon.

The launch event will introduce the collection and highlight the significance of these works in capturing history, challenging injustice and inspiring future generations of readers and writers.

Following the unveiling, titles from the Black Classic Literature Collection will be available to borrow on a one-week loan basis, ensuring the community has direct access to these powerful works.

Join this celebration of literature that moves, challenges and inspires, and discover voices whose impact continues to resonate across time and place.
