Windmill to Windrush

Tuesday 8 July

Join local guide Diana for a captivating two-hour walking tour through the heart of Brixton, tracing over 2,000 years of history, culture, and community.

Beginning at the iconic Brixton Windmill—the last remaining working windmill in London—this walk offers a unique opportunity to explore a rich tapestry of stories that have shaped the area into what it is today.

The route covers approximately two miles and includes a fascinating stretch of the old Roman Road as well as sections that follow the path of the hidden Effra River. Along the way, Diana will share tales of monarchs who once passed through, writers and influencers who left their mark, and places of worship that have served as spiritual and community hubs through the centuries.

This walk is more than just a stroll through local landmarks—it’s a deep dive into Brixton’s layered past. From literary figures to grassroots movements, and even an unsolved murder mystery, each stop along the journey adds another dimension to the story of this dynamic part of London.

The walk culminates in Windrush Square, widely recognised as the symbolic heart of Brixton and a space of remembrance and celebration for the Windrush Generation. Here, the past meets the present in a vibrant public space that reflects the resilience and diversity of the community.

Whether you’re a long-time local or new to the area, this walking tour offers something for everyone—education, entertainment, and the chance to see Brixton in a new light. Come along to celebrate the history, mystery and ministry of one of London’s most compelling neighbourhoods.
