Black History Month Showcase

Wednesday 21st October 2026

Young performers take centre stage at Blue Coat Theatre for a special evening of music, dance, drama and spoken word created to celebrate Black History Month.

The Black History Month Showcase brings together students from across the school, providing them with an opportunity to explore Black histories, cultures and contributions through creative performance.

Rather than approaching Black History Month solely through classroom study, the event encourages young people to respond artistically to what they learn and to communicate those ideas with an audience.

Music can tell stories that written archives do not preserve. Dance can connect young people with cultural traditions and contemporary identities. Drama and spoken word can create space to examine subjects including representation, belonging, achievement and equality from personal as well as historical perspectives.

By bringing these different forms together, the showcase celebrates the breadth of Black creativity while placing students themselves at the heart of the programme.

The organisers describe the evening as a celebration of the rich cultures, histories and contributions of Black communities, with performances intended to educate, inspire and entertain.

Events such as this are particularly valuable during Black History Month because they allow younger generations to become active participants rather than simply observers.

Performing, researching and creating work around Black history can encourage students from Black backgrounds to see their heritage represented within school life, while giving all pupils opportunities to encounter histories and perspectives beyond their own experience.

The event also reflects the importance of schools creating spaces where cultural diversity is publicly recognised and celebrated.

Taking place at 5:00pm on Wednesday 21st October, the Blue Coat Theatre showcase promises an uplifting evening celebrating student creativity, diversity and the many voices that make up the school community.

TicketSource currently indicates that tickets are due to become available from 7th September 2026.
