A powerful new theatre production exploring cancer, family, health and community through the familiar cultural setting of the local barbershop.
Barbershop Uncut Stories follows a barber and his customers as they share their experiences of cancer diagnosis, treatment, recovery and survival. Through honest storytelling, humour and emotion, the production explores the realities of living with cancer and the importance of early detection, support and open conversation.
Created by Lorna Jones, Director of C & Hair CIC, the production is written and directed by BAFTA-winning director Rochelle Newman of New Duke Films. Building on the success of previous performances, this new production brings fresh stories and perspectives to the stage.
Prostate cancer disproportionately affects Black men, with one in four expected to receive a diagnosis during their lifetime. Yet conversations about men’s health can remain difficult because of stigma, fear and mistrust. Through theatre, Barbershop Uncut Stories seeks to break that silence and encourage potentially life-saving conversations.
The production also highlights breast cancer awareness and recognises the effect a diagnosis can have on an entire family. It encourages audiences to understand their family health history, recognise symptoms and talk openly with their loved ones.
Following the performance, audiences are invited to participate in an after-show panel discussion with healthcare professionals. This will provide an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about cancer awareness, men’s and women’s health, early diagnosis and family health history.
The event is delivered in partnership with RM Partners NHS Cancer Alliance and Croydon Council’s Creative Health Team.
Content notice: The production contains emotional scenes and discussions of cancer, mental health and suicide that some audience members may find distressing.
