Celebrate the poets whose words continue to live long after them at Dead Poets Slam, a participatory evening of poetry hosted by award-winning writer Dean Atta.
Taking place at Acton Library, the event invites audiences to choose a poet from the past who has inspired them and perform one of their poems in front of a welcoming audience.
The evening is designed to bring poetry off the page and back into a shared community space, celebrating the writers whose words continue to shape contemporary culture, identity and creative expression.
Hosting the event is Dean Atta, one of Britain’s best-known contemporary poets and writers. His work includes the acclaimed verse novel The Black Flamingo, while his writing draws on his Jamaican and Greek Cypriot heritage, identity, belonging and the experiences of growing up in Britain.
For Black History Month audiences, Dead Poets Slam offers an opportunity to revisit the work of Black poets from Britain and around the world alongside writers from many different traditions.
Participants might choose writers whose poetry has documented migration, racism, family, resistance, love, identity or political struggle, or simply a poet whose words have remained personally meaningful.
The event is open to all languages and all levels of experience, so participants do not need to be professional performers or experienced poets to take part.
Those who prefer simply to listen and discover new writing can also enjoy an evening built around the continuing power of poetry and spoken word.
Dead Poets Slam takes place at Acton Library on Thursday 1st October 2026 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.
