Hastings-based historian and author S. I. Martin explores the hidden history of London’s Black pubs and taverns from the 17th to the 19th centuries.
Far more of these establishments existed than many people realise. Pubs with Black landlords, known as “guvnors”, or a predominantly Black clientele became important places of community, resistance and social change.
These venues brought people together, provided spaces for conversation and connection, and helped shape the cultural life of the capital.
During this illustrated talk, S. I. Martin will uncover the stories of the people who owned, managed and visited these establishments, revealing a side of London’s history that is rarely included in traditional accounts.
The event is ideal for anyone interested in Black British history, London’s social history or the overlooked stories hidden within familiar streets and neighbourhoods.
