Black Heroes of Mathematics Conference 2026 brings mathematicians, educators, students and supporters together in Edinburgh for a two-day celebration of Black excellence in mathematics and mathematics education.
Taking place during Black History Month 2026, the conference will highlight the achievements, experiences and career journeys of Black mathematicians while encouraging a new generation of students to see mathematics as a field in which they can participate, contribute and succeed.
Organised in partnership by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS) and the London Mathematical Society (LMS), the 2026 programme combines presentations, panel discussions and opportunities for participants to hear directly from mathematicians working across research, education, technology and related fields.
Speakers will explore a wide variety of subjects, demonstrating the breadth of contemporary mathematical work. Topics range from artificial intelligence and mathematical modelling to health research, population dynamics and structural inequalities within algorithmic decision-making.
Alongside technical discussions, an important part of the conference is the opportunity to hear about the personal journeys of Black mathematicians and the routes they have taken into their professions.
Representation remains particularly important within mathematics and related STEM subjects. Young people are more likely to imagine themselves pursuing particular careers when they can see people with similar backgrounds already succeeding within those professions.
The conference therefore combines academic discussion with a wider commitment to visibility, opportunity and encouragement.
A new Black Heroes of Mathematics Youth Festival will also run virtually alongside the conference, giving schools across the UK an opportunity to engage with inspiring mathematical role models and interactive educational sessions.
Taking place at the Bayes Centre at the University of Edinburgh, the main conference is free to attend and participants can choose between attending in person or joining remotely.
In-person registration closes on Monday 14th September 2026, while registration for remote participation closes on Monday 5th October 2026.
