Black History Month Lecture 2026: Professor Stephen Small
Thursday 22 October 2026
Professor Stephen Small explores the history of Black Liverpool and the distinctive forms of Black cultural expression that emerged in the city during the final decades of the 20th century.
Drawing on research from his recently published book, Black Liverpool: ‘The Real Thing’, Professor Small will examine the historical journey of Liverpool’s Black community and the cultural identities that developed from it.
The lecture will consider how Black communities in Liverpool encountered, embraced and transformed successive waves of transnational Black culture arriving from Africa and across the diaspora.
Through this history, Professor Small will explore what made Black cultural expression in Liverpool distinctive and how local communities reshaped global influences to reflect their own lives, experiences and identities.
