Ibibio Sound Machine

Friday 23rd October 2026

Ibibio Sound Machine brings its exhilarating combination of West African rhythms, funk, electronic music, disco and post-punk to Edinburgh’s Liquid Room.

Fronted by Nigerian singer Eno Williams, the London-based ensemble has developed a distinctive sound in which African musical traditions sit naturally alongside contemporary British electronic and club culture.

The group’s music is particularly interesting because language and storytelling are as important as rhythm.

Williams has drawn upon stories she heard from her family, with lyrics using Ibibio, the language spoken by her family in south-eastern Nigeria.

Those stories provide a cultural thread connecting the band’s modern electronic production with Nigerian heritage.

Musically, the result crosses borders just as confidently.

West African highlife and funk sit beside synthesisers, disco grooves, horns and the energy of London club music.

It is a reminder that African culture in Britain has never been static.

Migration creates new forms of expression as musicians carry languages, rhythms and memories with them and combine these with sounds encountered in a new home.

That makes Ibibio Sound Machine particularly relevant during Black History Month.

The group offers a contemporary example of African and British identities existing together rather than being treated as separate worlds.

Their work celebrates heritage while refusing to be limited by it.

For audiences looking for an October event that feels completely contemporary while still carrying a strong connection to African culture, this should be one of the standout Scottish dates.

Expect a standing-room show built around percussion, electronics, brass, driving rhythms and the unmistakable presence of Eno Williams — music connecting Nigeria, London and the global dancefloor.
