Scotland’s historical links with the Caribbean are extensive and can be seen in Scottish street names such as Jamaica Street; the name Gladstone itself has links with the Caribbean. Many people from the Caribbean have Scottish surnames because around 30% of Caribbean slave plantations were owned by Scots.
Sir Geoff Palmer became the first Black professor in Scotland in 1989, and is a prominent figure in Scottish education, human rights activism, and anti-racism campaigning.
