Join Derek A. Bardowell for an exploration of Fire Inna Dancehall, tracing the sounds, styles and struggles behind an influential cultural movement.
Moving from inner-city Kingston to London’s council estates, New York block parties and underground scenes in Panama and Puerto Rico, the book follows dancehall’s development across different places and communities.
Former reggae columnist Bardowell examines the people and politics that shaped the music, alongside its achievements, controversies and losses. His account considers dancehall as a form of creativity and resistance, as well as an expression of survival and collective joy.
The evening offers an opportunity to explore the wider cultural significance of dancehall and the ways its influence has travelled beyond Jamaica.
Presented at Brixton Library as part of Lambeth Libraries’ Black History Month programme.
