Celebrate 25 years of one of the most influential novels in modern Black British literature as Malorie Blackman reflects on the extraordinary legacy of Noughts & Crosses at the Southbank Centre.
First published in 2001, Noughts & Crosses introduced readers to a divided society in which the ruling Black Crosses hold power over the white Noughts.
At the centre of the story are Sephy and Callum, childhood friends whose relationship develops in a world shaped by racism, segregation, political violence and deeply entrenched inequality.
By reversing familiar racial power structures, Blackman created a novel that challenged readers to think differently about prejudice and discrimination while telling an intensely personal story of friendship, love, family and injustice.
The novel became a major success and has gone on to influence generations of young readers. It developed into a bestselling series and was later adapted for television and the stage.
Blackman has become one of Britain’s most important writers for children and young adults. In 2013 she became the first Black person to serve as Children’s Laureate, using the role to champion reading, diversity and greater representation in children’s publishing.
More than two decades after Noughts & Crosses first appeared, its questions around racism, power, opportunity and social division remain strikingly relevant.
This special anniversary event offers audiences the opportunity to hear Blackman reflect on the creation of the novel, its extraordinary journey from page to screen and stage, and the impact it has had on readers around the world.
Presented as part of the London Literature Festival 2026 and in association with the Service95 Book Club, the evening celebrates both the enduring importance of Noughts & Crosses and Blackman’s wider contribution to British literature.
Malorie Blackman: Noughts & Crosses at 25 takes place at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre, on Wednesday 28th October 2026 at 8:00pm.
