Discover the lives and achievements of Black British ballet pioneers in an evening of conversation with dancer and teacher Darren Panton at Durning Library.
Black dancers have been part of British ballet since at least the 1940s, yet many of their contributions have received little recognition. The Black British Ballet project seeks to bring these histories to wider attention and celebrate the dancers who helped open doors for others.
Darren Panton was the first Black dancer to graduate from the Royal Ballet School’s White Lodge. His career has included work with Rambert Contemporary Dance Company, Birmingham Royal Ballet and London City Ballet, as well as teaching through the Royal Ballet’s Chance to Dance programme.
His performance experience also extends to productions including The Lion King and Notre Dame de Paris, alongside appearances with a wide range of internationally known recording artists.
Organised with the Friends of Durning Library, this Black History Month event offers an opportunity to hear about a varied dance career while exploring a frequently overlooked part of British cultural history.
Refreshments will be available, with a suggested donation of £3.
