The Brixton Experience: Black History Month

Saturday 17th October 2026

Discover Brixton from within through its Black history, culture and the lived experiences of the people who shaped the area.

Join Cee from Karol’s Tours, a qualified Lambeth tour guide and Brixton resident of more than 40 years, for an immersive journey through the heart of the community.

Follow the story from the hopes and aspirations of the Windrush generation to Brixton today. Discover how Caribbean communities created a sense of home, identity and belonging in post-war Britain.

Hear about No Colour Bar dances, blues parties, sound systems and Lovers Rock, alongside the struggles surrounding housing, employment, racial discrimination, policing and the sus laws.

Walk through the history of Railton Road and the 1981 uprising, and discover the events that contributed to the uprising of 1985.

Brixton’s story is also one of resilience, creativity and ambition. The tour will explore the markets, murals, music, Caribbean businesses and Black entrepreneurship that continue to shape the area.

Cee’s relationship with Brixton began with childhood visits before she became a long-standing resident. Her memories and connections with people who experienced some of the area’s defining moments provide a personal perspective that reaches beyond the history books.

This is a relaxed and interactive walking tour, with time to talk, take photographs, browse, meet people and experience Brixton’s atmosphere.

The tour will finish with the group sitting down together to enjoy a taste of Caribbean food.

Come for Black History Month and discover a story that deserves to be shared throughout the year.
