Black History Month: Plants and Empire

Tuesday 27 October 2026

Discover how plants became central to colonial power in a specialist tour drawing on objects from Glasgow Museums’ collections.

The session examines connections between plants, science, food production and technology, exploring how their uses helped sustain empire and continue to influence lives today.

Examples include sugar production, its reliance on enslaved labour and the damage caused by transforming land into plantations. The tour also considers quinine and its significance within imperial expansion.

By looking at these histories through museum collections, visitors can explore the relationships between natural resources, exploitation and scientific development.

The event forms part of Glasgow Life’s Black History Month programme. Places are free but limited to fifteen, so booking is essential.
