Dr Gwenetta Curry delivers Newcastle University’s INSIGHTS Black History Month Lecture, examining how structural racism continues to affect the health and wellbeing of Black communities in Britain.
The lecture recognises the contribution of Black healthcare workers, particularly women who migrated from the Caribbean and whose skills helped build and sustain the NHS.
Alongside this history, Curry considers continuing inequalities in health, employment and career progression. Drawing on contemporary evidence, she explores the connections between health outcomes, access to opportunity and the wider social conditions shaping people’s lives.
A Reader in Race, Ethnicity and Health at the University of Edinburgh, Curry researches racialised health inequalities, maternal health and Black family studies.
The event will also consider the actions needed to advance racial equity within healthcare and society.
