Roots and Futures brings community histories, heritage projects, new archives and anti-racist cultural work into the heart of Sheffield with a free four-day exhibition at the city’s Winter Garden.
Based at the University of Sheffield, Roots and Futures works alongside communities across the city to explore how histories, heritage and storytelling can be used to celebrate diversity and help shape a more inclusive future.
The project’s work encompasses creative consultation, local projects and anti-racist cultural initiatives, bringing academic research into direct conversation with the knowledge and experiences of Sheffield communities.
A central part of the initiative is the creation of new resources, archives and anthologies that help ensure community histories are not lost or excluded from the wider story of the city.
The exhibition showcases examples of this work, giving visitors an opportunity to discover the people, partnerships and ideas that have contributed to Roots and Futures.
A special interactive drop-in session takes place on Sunday 18th October from 12:00pm until 4:00pm, providing an additional opportunity to engage directly with the project.
The wider exhibition runs from 18th to 21st October, 10:00am–4:00pm each day, and is free to visit without advance booking.
For Black History Month, Roots and Futures offers a valuable reminder that Black history is also local history — created, remembered and preserved within communities across cities such as Sheffield.
