Celebrating Black Excellence in the Built Environment brings together leading professionals from engineering, property, construction and the wider built environment for a special Black History Month discussion focused on leadership, representation and opportunity.
Organised by CIBSE Home Counties South West in collaboration with the TfL RACE Colleague Network Group, BPIC Network and Rider Levett Bucknall, the event will explore the experiences of Black professionals working across industries that play a major role in shaping Britain’s towns, cities and infrastructure.
The evening brings together four experienced industry leaders — Amos Simbo OBE, Sanda Mpanza, Hakeem Makanju CEng MCIBSE and Sovina Vernon-White — who will share their career journeys and discuss the experiences that have helped shape their professional lives.
Conversation throughout the evening will explore themes including career development, identity and visibility, authentic leadership, workplace culture, collaboration and the importance of creating environments where people from different backgrounds are able to develop and progress.
The discussion will also consider the next generation of talent. Representation within engineering, property, architecture and construction remains important not simply in terms of who enters these professions but also who progresses into positions of leadership and influence.
By bringing professionals from different parts of the industry together, the event aims to encourage greater collaboration while recognising the achievements of Black people already making significant contributions across the built environment.
Taking place during Black History Month 2026, Celebrating Black Excellence in the Built Environment provides an opportunity to recognise progress while continuing the conversation about what businesses, professional bodies and industry leaders can do to create lasting change.
The event is open to engineers, surveyors, architects, contractors, consultants, students and anyone working in or considering a career within the built environment.
